Resources

No matter how long you have been on a gluten-free and dairy-free lifestyle your attitude is important. If you approach it with anger/fear/ hate you are putting yourself in a fight or flight mode and your digestion will not be optimal. Instead, approach it with a positive attitude and focus on what you can eat. In addition, remember to slow down and chew your food in a peaceful and joyful mood. This frame of mind will help you digest and assimilate your food. Finally, remember you are not alone and there are a growing number of resources to help you navigate this gluten-free and dairy-free lifestyle. I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan and below are just a few of our local tools.

Shopping

Many regional and national grocery chains carry gluten-free and dairy-free products. Remember many foods such as fruits, vegetables and meats are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.  Always read the labels when buying canned, frozen or processed foods. If in doubt ask the employees for help. I have found that the staffs at health food stores are very knowledgeable. In Kalamazoo we are blessed to have three health food stores. I like to shop our local health food stores because it supports our local economy and farmers. Two cost effective ways to reduce costs are shopping weekly/monthly store deals and becoming members of store’s buying clubs.

The Natural Health Center Of Kalamazoo at 4610 West Main in Kalamazoo, Michigan has buyers club with a money back guarantee. If you don’t save as much as the membership, they will refund you the difference. In addition, you will receive at least 20% discount on retail prices including sales items. Most months, I give gluten-free and dairy-free cooking classes in their classroom.
